There are no two ways about it. Getting a breast cancer diagnosis turns your world upside down. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, anxious and unsure about what comes next. But we're here to share some positive news — you don’t have to face it alone.
At The House of Hope, we’re getting ready to open our doors right here in Edinburgh to welcome and support anyone affected by breast cancer. Whether you're newly diagnosed, going through treatment, or adjusting to life afterwards, our warm, friendly space will offer wellbeing sessions, holistic therapies, information, and above all, a listening ear. We're also here to support the loved ones of people with a breast cancer diagnosis, as we understand the stress is felt by the wider circle of family and friends.
While we're working around the clock to prepare The House of Hope for opening in the coming months, this Stress Awareness Month, we're sharing a few simple tips to help reduce stress and look after your wellbeing in the meantime:
Breathe deeply and often
When stress hits, your breath becomes shallow and your chest can feel tight. Try pausing for a few minutes to breathe deeply — in through your nose for four counts, hold for four, out through your mouth for four. It’s amazing how this simple act can calm you down and help you collect your thoughts.
Stay connected
Talking to someone who understands can lift a heavy weight. Whether it’s a friend, family member or support group, you don’t need to bottle things up. And soon, The House of Hope will be a safe space for just that — chatting over tea, sharing stories, and simply being heard.
Move that body
You don't need to break a sweat - move gently. Whether it’s a walk in the fresh spring air, a gentle stretch, or some calming yoga, movement helps release tension and boost your mood. Don’t worry about doing too much — every little bit counts. And just getting outdoors is a great mood-booster.
Focus on things you can control
Cancer comes with a lot of unknowns, which feels scary. But there are always lots of things you can control — what you eat today, who you speak to, how you spend your time. Focus on these choices and make them positive, and let the rest come one day at a time.
Give yourself a break
There is no ‘right’ way to feel. Some days you’ll be strong; other days, not so much. That’s okay. Self-care is key during these difficult days. Allow yourself to rest, say no to things you don't feel up to, and take time out when you need it. Taking care of you isn’t selfish — it’s essential.
As we prepare to open The House of Hope, we want you to know this: you’re already part of our community. A community that believes in compassion, connection, and creating a gentle space for healing and hope.
Stay tuned for updates — we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors soon.
With warmth,
Lisa and The House of Hope Team 💗
